When Windows Weep: 6 Signs That Your Windows Need Replacing

Posted on: 20 October 2021

Windows serve many functions. For instance, windows provide a view to the outside world, bring in natural light and help you ventilate your home. Windows are an integral part of any building. But when windows begin to fail due to age and wear and tear, they can become more of a burden than a benefit.

When windows can no longer serve their purpose adequately, they begin to display the following signs.

1. Drafts

If your windows are letting in drafts that leave you feeling cold during the winter, then the seals may have failed. Drafty windows allow cold air into your home, so you'll always struggle to heat your home during winter. You'll also struggle to stay cool during summer since the cold air provided by your air conditioner is escaping through your drafty windows.

2. Rising energy bills

Drafty windows and windows that are not energy efficient, such as single-pane windows, will cause your energy bills to rise. Consider replacing your windows with energy-efficient windows, such as double-glazing.

3. Condensation

Condensation isn't always a bad sign. Modern windows utilize two panes of glass with a layer of insulating air in between the panes. This improves the energy efficiency of a building when the windows are functioning in the way they should. But if you notice condensation between the two panes, then you have a problem. The seal around your windows has failed.

Condensation between two panes means that windows have lost their ability to insulate your home from the heat and the cold.

4. Noise

If your windows are letting in more noise than is comfortable for you, then you need to replace them with something more efficient. You can invest in windows that have glass thick enough to dampen sound effectively. You can also invest in good-quality windows with insulating frames and airtight seals.

5. Decay and damage

If your windows are visibly damaged from wear and tear, and you struggle to open and close your windows, this is a good time to replace your windows. Windows with visible damage are likely much less efficient at keeping out drafts and cold than new windows.

6. Faded furniture

When your windows can't stop UV light from causing colour fading of your furniture, flooring and fabrics, you probably need to replace them. Consider installing windows with low emissivity to prevent UV light from damaging your home's interior.
