Two Tips for Parents Who Want to Turn Their Adult Child’s Unused Bedroom Into an Office

Posted on: 14 August 2020

If your child has reached adulthood and lives away from the family home, and you'd like to turn their bedroom into an office, these tips could help you.

Consider putting the belongings your child left in their bedroom into a storage unit

When they first move out, a lot of young people leave their sentimental belongings from their childhoods in their family homes. If your child did this and these items are currently housed in their old room, you will need to find a new storage spot for these things (or throw them out) before you can start transforming this space into an office. If your child's own home is small or if they're living in a houseshare, then they might not be able to pick up these items and store them in their property. However, the idea of you throwing these sentimentally valuable items away because you can't store them anymore might upset them.

In this situation, you should consider putting the items from your child's childhood into a storage unit. Storage units are cheap to rent and are particularly useful if you need somewhere to put fragile things (like your child's old drawings or report cards from decades ago), as these units are damp-proof and pest-proof, which means these delicate goods won't get damaged. As such, these things will still be in good condition a few years from now when your child has a bigger home and is ready to start storing them in that property.

Do a bit of DIY on your child's old furniture so you can use it for your new office

Rather than putting your child's old bed, desk and other furniture into the storage unit, you should consider doing some DIY that will enable you to use it for your new office. For example, you could use the slats from their old bed to make a shelving unit for your paperwork and folders. Likewise, if your child's old desk chair is adult-sized, you could reupholster it to make it a bit more chic and comfortable.

This will allow you to rent a smaller storage unit (or to put a few other items, that are using up too much space in your home, into this unit). It will also cut the cost of transforming this room into an office and allow you to incorporate furniture that has sentimental value to you into this new space.
