Two tips for those who have just bought a secondhand, slightly shabby lounge suite

Posted on: 7 October 2019

If you recently bought a secondhand lounge suite for your home but you don't like how shabby it looks, the tips below could help you to whip this suite into shape.

Borrow or buy an overlocker sewing machine

In this situation, one thing you could do to improve the lounge suite's appearance is to get your hands on an overlocker sewing machine and use it to neaten up the upholstery fabric on your new furniture.

Overlocker sewing machines are fantastic for creating straight, tidy-looking hems and seams. If, for example, your sofas and armchairs have skirts with fallen hems, you could use a sewing machine like this to fix them. This would not only make the skirts on these pieces of furniture look better, but it would also prevent them from dragging across the floor and getting dirty each time the people in your home move these pieces of furniture from one spot to another.

Additionally, if there are, for example, some coffee-ring stains on the arms of the sofas and chairs that you have not been able to remove, you can also use this sewing machine to make hemmed lace arm covers for these items of furniture. This should not only cover up these stubborn stains but should also make the suite a lot prettier and help you to learn to love this less-than-perfect addition to your home.

Dye the covers on the sofa and armchairs

If the covers on the armchairs and sofa are removable, then you should consider taking them off and dyeing them. This is a particularly worthwhile endeavour if the current colour of the suite does not really complement the colour scheme of your home. For example, if the fabric on the suite is a bland shade of beige but the rest of your house interior features a lot of vivid jewel tones, then you might want to buy a dye in emerald green or royal blue, as this could make the suite blend in more effectively with your other decor.

The dyeing process itself should be fairly simple; all you will have to do is either soak the fabric in the dye in your bathtub or pop the dye and the upholstery fabric into your washing machine. It is important to pick a dye that is made for use on upholstery fabric because otherwise, the fabric might not absorb all of the dye and your project might, therefore, not yield the results you wanted.
