Benefits Of Ceramic And Porcelain Tiled Splashbacks

Posted on: 26 March 2019

Ceramic and porcelain tiles emerge from a traditional baking process. A kiln fires the moulded clay to produce the final forms; porcelain develops from finer clay type and higher temperatures. Both kinds of tiles offer several benefits for kitchen renovations.

They Suit Different Kitchen Styles

Though tiles are not new, they are being reinvented all the time in line with current trends and so can fit in with many different kitchen aesthetics. Traditional soft-edged tiles bring a classic warm and inviting feel to a kitchen. On the other hand, flat-edged rectified versions in large-format sizes evoke a modern, clean look. To create this effect, a machine trims the four sides of rectified tiles, removing the soft edge that results from the baking process. Because each tile is then a precise size, the contractor can lay them very closely with narrow grout lines, accentuating the seamless effect. So though tiles have been widespread across the ages, such innovations are increasing options all the time.

They Allow For Creativity

Tiles allow you to be creative because you can customise virtually every aspect. As well as choosing the edge type, you can select the size, shape and colour. You could install an ornate patterned-tile in an otherwise toned-down minimalist kitchen to create a stunning splashback feature. Or else, you might choose a tile shade that merges in with the kitchen so that another element, such as a benchtop, takes centre stage. Subway tiles, which have been around for decades, are now popular in distinctive patterns, such as herringbone or stacked-vertical. Or you could express yourself with brick-like effects or a mosaic feature. If your splashback covers an extended area, however, you might be better with larger tiles to avoid a busy look with too-frequent grouting. Though, on the other hand, a detailed 'cheap and cheerful' look is precisely what some designs deliberately emphasise with high-contrast grout colours. The range of possibilities is wide open.

Durable And Easy Maintenance

Ceramic and porcelain tiles are extremely durable and long-lasting. As well, they are easy to clean using standard kitchen detergents. Porcelain tiles are naturally non-porous and hard, and the decorative glazes on ceramic tiles provide a protective barrier.  Make sure, though, to seal the grouting to prevent moisture seepage. Also, when installing tiles, it is a good idea to purchase more than you need so you can easily replace any damaged or broken ones. The reason for this is that as the actual baking is natural to some degree, the colour can vary slightly between batches. So for precise matching, it is better to have some spare tiles left over.
